How Chores Can Shape Your Children's Leadership Skills

Every parent wants to raise a responsible child. Many parents opt to give their child a list of chores to do around the house. The parents pay them a small allowance and in most cases will also have ultimate control in what the allowance money is spent on. Some argue that assigning chores too early can be damaging. Are we putting too much pressure on our children?

A great way to teach your child the value of money is to give them chores. Chores can range from menial tasks such as helping mom dry the dishes (great for the younger kids) to washing the family car (a chore aimed at teens). As the children get older, let them know that their performance will determine the amount of money they get. It is important to be stern yet fair about this. Is instills a great sense of pride in the child's work, no matter how small the task.

It is also important to make sure that your child understands that there is a degree of responsibility that goes along witch chores. Make them aware that by doing chores, they are doing their part to help their parents keep the house tidy. Some parents feel that offering an allowance for such tasks helps make the connection between chores and responsibility a little more clear. This also opens the door to presenting further leadership skills to them in the form of managing their money.

Leadership skills are a bit easier to convey to your children if you have more than one child. You must express to your older child that the younger sibling looks up to them. If the older sibling routinely cleans their room or helps wash dishes after dinner, the younger sibling will follow suit. This is a great and influential way to show both children how leadership is essential to achieving common goals.

Sit down and discuss with your child what you expect of him. Don't be afraid to back off if you have given them more than they can chew and be sure to reward them for taking the initiative to go above and beyond your expectations.

If it is the family counselor that interest you, this would be a great line of work to go in to, as many people need help and understanding in their family life. It may be counseling in school that you would like to go in to. That would be wonderful as it guides an individual through the system to help them achieve what they want.
